The Yoshio KUBO collection at MBFW Toyko featured long tunics, boxy shapes and of course some creative jackets–and here at BDMOTP we just love the jackets. The collection was prepared to weather all sorts of obstacles, with head and face coverings for those heading out into the desert, on a motorcycle ride, or into the mean city streets. The line was strong and fierce, and head coverings gave it a kind of all-terrain feel, like the KUBO man could handle anything!

Whereas several of the looks were military-esque and had army green and beige colors, there were a few interesting patterns and pops of color, like turquoise which gave it a softer feel. Interestingly enough, the man skirt was even featured, juxtaposing the masculine strength with a more approachable feminine feel.

The jackets were unique. From blazers to leather bombers to even a denim jacket, a KUBO jacket could look cool paired with any outfit.

If you combine Lucha Libre Mexican fighter masks with artist Jason Pollock, this might give you an idea of the PlasticTokyo look. Made of fabric and not plastic, the designs are vibrant graffiti prints combintions complete with face and head coverings. While the looks are definitely not for the faint of heart, one might combine a jacket with an all black look for a milder look. After all, Pollock isn’t for everyone!

Bandanas also proved to have a new use in the collection, folder into hat shapes for a different style of head covering than in your typical J.Lo music video. Peace signs and marijuana leaves bring us a 70’s theme, though the silhouettes were decidedly modern.

If you are a man hoping to get noticed, you definitely will be by wearing a PlasticTokyo look.

Once again, MBFW Tokyo’s favorite Patchy Cake Eater blows us away with a grand collection, making his name slightly less disturbing with each season that passes. His designs certainly aren’t patchy or cakey, for that matter. Instead, the Patchy Cake Eater SS16 collection shows us style and maturity with it’s dapper yet trendy suit selection and spring-ish trench coats.

Different types of button closures for the blazers give each of the suit looks a bit of originality and the plethora of muted colors works perfectly for early spring. The occasional appearance of stripes and dots gives the collection that extra bit of oomph. Bowties and vests over more casual-style looks give off a delicate hipster vibe. A pool table placed on the runway provides some context for the clothes and the man who will be wearing them. Confident, precise and sharp.

The Matohu collection designed by Koji Udo is all about layers, layers and layers. The designer takes his inspiration from the air, outdoor elements and landscapes.

Thinking about these concepts, the collection makes so much sense. The menswear looks, though masculine, have a lightness, a softness to them that allows them to be strong while still being beautiful. The clothes are constructed with the utmost care in design and tailoring showing both elegance and style. The line is just stylish enough to be relevant, without ever abandoning the craftmanship or beauty.

BDMOTP was particulary impressed with the jackets, especially the grey jacket look over the patterned shorts.

5351 Les Hommes by Kazuhisa Komura is all about the modern, diverse man. The SS 2016 collection starts off with a huge appearance of the hunter green color and some military prints, showing us strength and intensity. Then the looks start slowly softening by including trends like funky hats and shorter or tapered trousers. Details like hoods also give the looks a casual, futuristic vibe. Later, we see the collection shift towards whites and greys for a lighter, more 80’s inspired look including short sleeves, layers and details like metal grommets. A few models sported the age-old mullet hairstyle (don’t tell us this is coming back into style), giving the entire collection a Wayne’s Worlds grunge meets Matrix vibe. We even get a bit of  a Michael Jackson vibe thanks to a baggy, tapered striped suits and boxy 80’s shapes.

BDMOTP is back in action at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tokyo and the first menswear show we’ve seen is Atsushi Nakashima. The Japanese designer worked alongside Jean Paul Gautlier for seven years in Paris before heading back to Tokyo in 2011 to launch his own collection.

But you won’t see any Madonna corsets coming from this Japanese prodigy. Nakashima’s AW16 collection couldn’t be more on point with what we’ve seen in the major fashion cities around the world like London, Paris and Milan. Colorblocking and geometric patterns dominate the collection, with a major emphasis on trends like the funky sneaker and turtlenecks. Both male and female models literally walked through metal hoops on the runway, a testament to Nakaskimas enduring spirit, perhaps?

The colors used for the menswear were mainly black and white with touches of red and hunter green. Metal accents were spotted throughout the collection in the form of belts and shoe adornments. Models looked sharp and serious, with slicked back hair and black, drawn out eyeliner. BDMOTP even headed backstage to get a feel for the vibe, and spotted some Maybelline makeup application in action.

We can’t help but fall in love with some of the jackets, which could be aptly paired with slacks, jeans…pretty much any style would look great with a Nakashima jacket covering it.

MBFW Sydney was a fashion week filled mostly with womenswear but also a few select menswear shows and pieces. As one might expect in the land down under, swimwear is big was featured randomly during the week for men.

We are handsome 2

Aussie swimwear brand We Are Handsome showed a combo of speedos mixed with swim trunks for men, patterned with colorful floral or tropical looks etched with grey, quite representative of their signature style. A surefire way to ring summer the Aussie way (all while most of the world welcomes fall, of course).

We are handsome 1

Changing courses from diving to dapper, a few suits from Calibre were also featured during the Red Carpet runway, which showed red-carpet appropriate looks (mainly for women) from a variety of different designers. Calibre’s suits were traditional and well-tailored, perfect for walking an evening red carpet. Or, for most men in the world, for a special date out, wedding etc.

Calibre 1

The suits weren’t particularly trendy, but simply elegant. Isn’t that what you want for evening wear anyway?

Calibre 2

Beach bum by day, red carpet by night, not a bad way to spend your time, Aussies!

Shen Yao Huang, set out in the Fall of 2015 to deliberately mix up the gender norms in the realm of fashion.  Based in Taipei, he believes that the body, male or female, is just a vehicle and he strives to break the boundaries confining menswear.  Clearly he has done just that with this collection.

While in town for Vancouver Fashion Week, someone suggested that I go down to Old Town to take in a meal and get a sense of the city.  Cruising around Old Town, Vancouver, also known as Gastown, you can immediately recognize why it is considered the heartbeat of the city.  Filled with mid to upscale boutiques and a wonderful selection of restaurants, it is easy to get into something fun.
